The Story: God’s Messengers

The Canopy, the Understory, and the Volcano

The Canopy, the Understory, and the Volcano

Location: Mount Si/Mount St. Helens

  • In our small group bible study, we have studied the book of Amos over the past 3 months. Amos accused the people of Israel of exploiting the poor, and worshiping money and luxury instead of God.
  • The ruling class of the people of Israel acted like the canopy of the type of rainforest we know well here in the Northwest: the trees grow tall and take the sunlight away from the understory. Yet the trees need the understory to provide them with nutrients. By living off of the death of the understory, the canopy can grow even taller. The tall trees are impressive and tall, and they feel invincible.
  • Until… the volcano erupts! No tree, however strong, stands a chance.
  • This was like Amos’ prophesy: “Surely the eyes of the Sovereign Lord are on the sinful kingdom. I will destroy it from the face of the earth.”
  • But God also promised: “Yet I will not totally destroy the descendants of Jacob.” And now the roles are reversed: the forest is growing back, on top of the dead trunks of what once were the tall trees.
