Side by side for a common cause. That is the most prevalent situation in which lifelong relationships have been built and solidified, sometime even spanning generations. You don’t really get to know a person unless you go through hardship together, when things get real. Fighting for a common purpose. Surviving shipwreck together. Beating a disease together. Serving together to help achieve a greater goal. It does not have to be serving together in a war and it does not have to be life threatening; but it has to be meaningful and have a profound impact on the lives of others.

Just think of it as a somewhat different approach to the Beatitudes: Blessed are THOSE WHO SERVE

….the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. (5:3)

….those who mourn: for they will be comforted. (5:4)

….the meek: for they will inherit the earth. (5:5)

….those who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they will be filled. (5:6)

….the merciful: for they will be shown mercy. (5:7)

….the pure in heart: for they will see God. (5:8)

….the peacemakers: for they will be called children of God. (5:9)

….those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (5:10)

A relationship based on your common preference for Frappuccino’s is fleeting. A relationship based on defending freedom, standing up for your belief in Jesus Christ, and coming to the aid of the oppressed is much more likely to withstand the test of time.
