How do We Remain Faithful and Engaged?

August 25, 2014

Location: Main Street and the railroad crossing at Edmonds ferry terminal

Slide notes:

  • Issues around sexual identity are as old as time. In many scriptures, the bible describes how God designed us to be and behave.
  • It is easy to become legalistic when focusing on sexual identity. Homosexuals and transgender people have been judged by many religions as living a sinful life.
  • When does something become a sin? Gluttony and sloth are two of the deadly sins. When does obesity become gluttony and hence a sin? When your Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeds 35? So if your BMI is 34 your are not a sinner, but when it is 35 you become a sinner? And when does a free spirit become a sloth? When there are four days of dirty dishes on the kitchen counter? Three days is still OK, but at four it becomes a sin?
  • Just like in the drawings of M.C. Escher (, it is hard to make sense of all the nuances of reality when it comes to sexual identity. In this week’s picture I have tried to symbolize confusion and contradiction:  Walk or don’t walk? Stop for the train or “no parking anytime”? Cross the railroad or stop for coffee? Boxed in, gray and square, or free, colorful and flowery?
  • Maybe as Christians we can make sense of the issue if we realize that every person is created in the image of God, and that He loves every single one of us. But embracing His grace in our spiritual life does not mean that our emotional and physical life is devoid of challenges and hurdles. We may never overcome the emotional and physical hurdles, but our job as Christians is to not shield anyone from the light of the spirit for any reason.

Thank you, Phil. You said this so well. Wish I could have been there Sunday to have heard it in person.
