Where Will You Find Peace?

July 15, 2013

???????????????????The neighbors across the street from our church just had the trunk of their tree carved into the shape of a peace sign. The carving is an amazing piece of work. It was fun to watch the chainsaw artist pull the image out of the otherwise ordinary trunk. (Ironically, his art work coincided with our hours for worship).

It has been interesting today to watch as people have noticed it. A utility worker had his picture taken next to it. A passenger hopped out of a car for a quick photograph. Another neighbor was talking to a passing motorist who wanted to take a look. This gesture was popularized in the 1960’s as a symbol for peace. I’m not sure it has stopped any wars or mended any relationships, but it is an endearing thought.

Forgive my cynical curiosity, but I can’t help but wonder how many people would have stopped for a look, let alone a picture, if the carving were a cross? I’m not suggesting there is anything wrong with the peace sign. I am suggesting that we are intrigued by oddities of our own invention while often failing to take note of the intricacies of the Inventor.

God’s peace sign for the past 2,000 years has been a cross. It is not filled with wistful hope, but with healing power. Where will you find peace?
