Recently, those who keep track of such details determined that the seven billionth person was born in the world.

Here is a simple yet incomprehensible thought – God loves us all. I have trouble loving a handful of people who are quite like me, but God loves every man, woman, and child – regardless of where we live, what color our skin, or what we believe.

Followers of Jesus can get the misguided notion that God loves us more – after all, the Bible tells us that those who believe in Jesus are called ‘children of God’. Surely, he loves his children at least a little bit more than those who might be considered only neighbors or friends.

We are the ones who are busy making the distinctions. God in his awesome power has created each of the seven billion plus people who are breathing today. No matter where we are born, what we possess, or what we believe, he loves us all. Followers of Jesus have not been called to a position of greater privilege, but of greater responsibility.

Since God loves us all, the seven billionth baby reminds us that we are to be treating each person we meet as a brother or sister. We who have discovered God’s love through Jesus are now asked to tell our brothers and sisters who may not know this great truth. There are nearly five billion people who do not follow Jesus. It is a daunting reminder of our task. God asks us to share his love with those we know. In our world today, the words of St. Francis of Assisi have never been more relevant, “Preach the gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words.”
