Breaking News

January 3, 2011

God is a Horned Frog. That is a rough paraphrase of what I heard one of the Texas Christian University football players say after their 21 to 19 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers in the 2011 Rose Bowl.

The well schooled player was even articulate enough to quote a verse from the Bible, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time” (I Peter 5:6 NIV). “This is an example of that here today,” the exuberant player observed.

This could be a case of an over zealous reaction in the midst of a very joyous celebration. I don’t fault the victorious player for his enthusiasm. However, I’d like to share an observation from a theological perspective. Simply put, God could give a rip about who wins the Rose Bowl. God cares about every Christian on the field playing to the best of their athletic ability and playing with the highest level of sportsmanship. Jesus did not come to earth and die on the cross to help any team win a game.

God is still in heaven whether you complete a pass or miss a tackle. He is not manipulating players as they run around the field causing one to drop the ball and helping one to jumping higher. God’s interest is not our muscles or our moves, but the humility of our hearts. God cares about our spiritual conditioning. We are all competing. The ultimate prize is not a trophy but eternity. Only one team can win a game of football, but we can all win the game of life. The goal is not to get God dressed up as our mascot. The goal is for us to become clothed in his grace. If that happened to 103,000 fans at a Rose Bowl, it would be breaking news.
